COURSE OVERVIEW:

This case-based presentation is designed to provide participants with evidence-based content and best practices to effectively increase the awareness of novel approaches to reduce LDL cholesterol in statin-intolerant patients and those patients at high cardiovascular risk. The educational content will also address patient/clinician communication and shared decision-making as outlined below. The multidisciplinary faculty was assembled to demonstrate the respective strengths of medicine and nursing in managing these challenging patients.

Nurses, advanced practice nurses, and other healthcare providers interested in the prevention and management of cardiovascular disease.

  • Describe the biochemical basis of abnormal lipid metabolism, noting areas that are targeted in both current and potential future therapies.
  • Describe an evidence-based therapeutic approach to the patient with a true intolerance to statin therapy.
  • Outline a treatment plan for the patient who has an inadequate response to high intensity statin therapy, including strategies to rule out suboptimal adherence and optimization of patient education.
  • Describe the integration of shared decision-making into the clinical encounter for a patient with elevated LDL-cholesterol.
